Hard Working Bees and Slacker Bees
Did you know that some bees work harder than others? Using an ingenious tracking system, scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign followed the movements of bees coming in and out of the hive. They discovered that 20% of the foraging bees did 50% of the work. But then, when the harder working bees were removed from the hive, the remaining bees stepped up their efforts and thus a new cadre of "elite" bees emerged.
Amazing stuff. Watch a video from the New York Times about this interesting study at: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/09/science/no-glass-ceiling-for-worker-bees.html?_r=0
